![]() The Second Commandment prompts us to examine our habits of thought and desires, or acts of worship, to see if we are putting more devotion towards material objects or affections than we do towards God, who is Spirit. As can be seen in the lessons for the children below, there is more to it than a prohibition against idols of stone. The Second Commandment may be ignored by some these days because people might naturally assume that because no one whose religion includes obedience to the Ten Commandments is bowing down to statues of wood or stone, the Second Commandment has no modern relevance or usefulness. Because God had forbidden the use of anything material to represent Him, the Second Commandment implies that God is Spirit, and is to be worshipped and loved spiritually. In the Bible, a graven image was one that had been carved, sculpted, or engraved, usually from the materials at hand, such as wood, stone, or metal. “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the inequity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me and shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.” (Exodus 20:4-6) The full statement of the Second Commandment reads: The Second Commandment emphasizes this oneness by demanding that idols, or graven images, not be created to represent, or to be, other gods, or to stand in for the one Supreme Being. It is clear from the First Commandment, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me,” that God, the great I AM, does not tolerate our worshipping other gods. “THOU SHALT NOT MAKE UNTO THEE ANY GRAVEN IMAGE.”
